Douglas is a late entrant to the rich baritone tradition of his native Scotland. An experienced big band player, he brings a foundational edge to the sax sections of various big bands he works with on the local scene. He has toured and played with Fat Sam’s Band, That Swing Sensation, SUBB, Baricuda, Shades of Dave Pell, The Jazz Bar Big Band, The Bobby Deans Big Band, Capital Big Band, Zig Zag and Byres Road Big Band. He is presently in the final year of his Jazz Performance degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where he has studied with Allon Beauvoisin, Tommy Smith, Paul Towndrow and Laura MacDonald. He works within the classic baritone tradition somewhere between Gerry Mulligan and Pepper Adams, finding everyday inspiration in their recordings and those of Serge Chaloff, Nick Brignola, Harry Carney, Leo Parker, Ronnie Cuber, Gary Smulyan, Lars Gullin, Paul Nedzela and Scotland’s very own Joe Temperley, Ronnie Ross and Jay Craig.
